Kampala — The Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) Awards launch in Lira is by far the most interesting. If it is not something to do with the commotion at the entrance as revellers jostled to enter Lira Hotel, then it is something to do with the performances.
The locals in Lira preferred home talent to Kampala-based artistes. So, the likes of Desire Luzinda, Henry Tigan, Stingerz, Ambassador Ssali and Obsessions were not about to outshine the northern artistes.
Northern artistes have stepped up their game compared to previous years.
The northern artistes put up great performances, but what remains to be seen is whether their music transfers well on to the bigger stage.
Nation X set the pace with their dancehall, alternating between Luganda, Langi and English.
Lady B'FAL wowed the crowd with her relaxed Langi rap. She won over new fans with some thinking she was a boy given her delivery and attire.
Peace "Daluo" Amongin, an upcoming artiste, also impressed.
The 2007 Northern Artiste of The Year, Lucky Bosmic Otim, proved he was still the area's best. He rocked fans hard with Kana (Don't Sell Land) and Politics of Revenge.
DJ Languna had the most time on stage; you would think this was his album launch concert. But still, the crowd never seemed to get enough of his Congolese inspired rhythms and Langi traditional tunes.
