To clean up the environment in Nairobi, Nema or the City Council should flex their muscle, says Irungu Karari, appalled at the heavy pollution of the river that snakes its way through the Industrial Area. He adds: "If, indeed, they have any muscle worth talking about, they must track down and punish whoever is responsible for the bluish river that flows opposite General Motors, off Mombasa Road. They're food kiosks serving workers, and it's only a matter of time before disaster strikes."
Bomas Junction-Ongata Rongai Road project resident engineer J. M. Mbarua says they are aware that many people use public transport and have taken that into consideration. "We regret the inconvenience. On the three-kilometre stretch through the town, the standard of construction shall be higher than for the rest of the road. The shoulders shall be stabilised with cement and bus bays built in new designated areas and old ones reinstated. For any queries, our offices are at Sanaa Arcade in Ongata Rongai."
While some are grumbling about the free calls offer by Safaricom, Sonica Akinyi is happy. Says she: "This is the only freebie I have ever enjoyed besides the 'Maziwa ya Nyayo' during my primary school days. Safaricom has revolutionised my life and enabled me to spend more hours on the phone. I'm happy about the offer at a time when the prices of all essential goods and services have terribly increased. There could be no better option."
Evelyn Kibuchi's remark that the skyrocketing food prices are a result of the post-violence and that Kenyans are reaping what they sowed is misleading, says John Mbayaki Sisa. "The high food prices are being felt everywhere around the globe. The rising oil prices have led to an increase in the cost of food. The high prices should be blamed on the rising oil prices and not on the peaceful and hardworking Kenyans."
The criminals who took advantage of the post-election protests to perpetrate crimes such as murder, rape and robbery should never be condoned in civilised society, says George M. Muthinja, rejecting the calls for a blanket amnesty. He adds: "I was an ardent ODM supporter and came home from Austria to vote, but I won't have these thugs back on the streets scot-free. After all, they belong to only one party, Criminal and Anti-society Party."
A pipe-smoker of nearly 40 years, P. A. Oyango of Khwisero is challenging Nakumatt to show that it actually lives up to its slogan, "If you need it, we've got it". Says Oyango: "I'm in need of one small item. I've been looking for it for the past eight months at their two outlets in Kisumu. I've also checked at their branches in Nairobi without success. It's the 50g packet of Sweet Nut tobacco, or any other brand. Since BAT stopped manufacturing pipe tobacco, I've been hit hard."
Nairobi City Council is trapped in a time-warp, remarks Duncan Mahindi, citing its failure to update its web site for two years. A visitor to the website will be amused to learn that the Mayor is Dick Wathika, who is, of course, the MP for Makadara! "Their latest entry is a Jamhuri Day message for December 2006. This reflects poorly on City Hall. Let those responsible know this makes them look very bad."
