Maiduguri — The National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) has disbursed items and cash loans valued at N 6million to some five registered co-operative associations in Borno State.
The exercise which took place at the premises of the NACB in Maiduguri was facilitated by a Borno based private partner to NAPEP, Kaleef Ventures, through a multi-partner matching fund (MPMF).
Speaking during the disbursement exercise, the state co-coordinator of NAPEP in Borno, Alhaji Ali Goni Lawan explained that the multi-partner matching funds scheme was the latest partnership strategy by NAPEP aimed at eradicating poverty in the country.
Under the scheme, said, NAPEP partners with states, local governments, commercial banks, mirco-finance institutions and other private organizations to make available a large pool of funds for on-lending to the poor.
Through this strategy, Ali said, NAPEP expects to stimulate grass-root activities and mass participation in the economic development process through saving and the provisions of credit facilities to poor people across the nation.
He recalled that Kaleef ventures as one of the accredited MFI had been mandated to disburse N12miilion with the first installment having been disbursed in Dec. last year.
In his speech, the chairman of Kaleef Ventures Alhaji Abba Kale explained that the N6million material and cash disbursement was targeted at qualified co-operative societies, farmers associations, and skill acquisition clubs/associations as well as petty traders.
Abba also pointed that Kaleef Ventures was expecting another support for full participation in the implementation of other Federal Government Poverty eradication programmes such as the conditional cash transfer (CCT) and the village economic development solution (VEDS).
Beneficiaries at the occasion were full of appreciation for the programme as they called on local and state governments in Borno state to also partake in the scheme so as to broaden the number of those to benefit in subsequent disbursements.
