Liberia: Senator Roland Kaine Charge With Murder

AllAfrica aggregates reports from Africa's news media. This is an article from the Liberian press. It is not a report by AllAfrica.

The Liberian government has charged Senator Roland Kaine of Margibi County with the crime of murder for his alleged role in the death of dozens of innocent Liberians reportedly hired by an official of the Ellen-led administration, Charles Bennie, to brush his farm in Ti-mour Town, Margibi County.

There are reports that Kaine and Bennie have been at loggerheads for a protracted period of time for ownership of the land.

In keeping with law, he should be tried in the county where the incident occurred, meaning that the case will be heard in his county of Margibi.

It has already been reported that he is moved from Monrovia to Kakata, the administrative seat of Margibi County, to face the law.

Few days ago, the Liberian Senate of which he is a member, asked him to turn himself over to the police to undergo preliminary investigations relative to the Ti-mour Town incident. Charles Bennie, who reportedly hired those killed, was also invited by the Police to help with the preliminary findings.

This paper has learnt that he (Bennie) is undergoing investigation, and if it were established that he played any substantial role, he would join his brother as well.

Because of the importance government and Liberians attach to the case, the trial is likely to get underway either today or in few days time, this paper has learnt.

Suspended Senator Kaine stands to be expelled from the Liberian Senate if he is found guilty to face whatever punishment the court may consider. If so, he would become the second lawmaker from the county to be expelled from the senate in less than two decades.

During the administration of detained President Charles Taylor, Senator Bedell Fahn of Margibi County was expelled from the Senate for acts unbecoming of a senator.
