Addis Abeba — Landmine Survivors Network Ethiopia (LSN) on Tuesday awarded certificates to its 31 members who completed with good results at the annual sports tournament for the disabled.
Organized by the Addis Abeba Sports Federation for Disabled, the two month-long tournament was held at the Addis Ababa Stadium and participants competed in different games ranging from athletics, table tennis, Javelin and Shoot-Pot.
Altogether, LSN members won 55 medals, 19 gold, 20 Silver and 16 bronze medals from different categories.
Some 512 participants under 17 clubs from 10 kifle Ketama in Addis Ababa took part in the competition which took place from March 28-May 18.
In recognition and appreciation of their impressive results at the competition, LSN, a national network of landmine survivors awarded certificates to its members who thrived at the tournament, in a ceremony at the Wabishebelle Hotel on Tuesday.
"Today, the network awarded certificates to encourage and support them for additional success" Bekele Gonfa Director of Landmine Survivors Network Ethiopia said on the occasion.
He added that the sport festival helps to build a bridge between physical rehabilitation and social reintegration by providing survivors and people with disabilities with the opportunity to come together around sports and recreational activities and begin advocating for their rights.
Speaking to The Daily Monitor, Bruktawit Adem, one of the recipients of the certificates who won a gold medal in Table Tennis spoke of the advantages of the tournaments in advancing the cause of the persons with Disabilities ( PWDs).
"It gives me a chance to identify my capability and also helps to build self confidence so that it was a great competition," she said.
Bruktawit is studying accounting in one of the private colleges in town, she said.
