Nigeria: Lagos Closes 50 Illegal Health Facilities

In line with its Health Sector Reform Law of 2006, the Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, (HEFAAMA) has closed down no fewer than 50 illegal health facilities in the state for offences ranging from quackery practice, training of auxiliary nurses, existence of living room within the facilities, lack of qualified personnel, poor facilities and non registration of the health facilities with the agency.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, who disclosed this in Lagos yesterdy explained that, the affected health facilities includes Iyanu Clinic at 144 Ishaga Road, Mushin; De Supreme Clinic at 18, Ikale street, Ijesha-Tedo; Mercy Way Maternity Centre at 23 Disu Aina Efon, Ejigbo; Laisims Medical Diagnostics Laboratory Services of 618, Balogun Iginde street, Ejigbo; OWJ Clinic at Egbogbele Owode Apa Road, Badagry; Ifeolu Maternity Home at Java Road, Ikoga, Badagry; and Better Medical Laboratory at 49 Alafia Street, Ejigbo, Lagos.
Idris further listed City Hospital at 100 Akowonjo Road, Alimosho; The Clinic at Ayodele Amosu street off Ikoga road, Alagbomeji Badagry; State Medical Centre, Ibereko Estate, Badagry; AM Clinic at 21, Oke Onjo street off Ogunlana street, Ijesha-Tedo; Muaz Hospital at 6, Fadu Avenue, new Ejigbo garage; Joy & Godwill Medical Centre at Oko Afor, Badagry; POE Clinic at 190, Ejigbo Road, Ejigbo; Vine Clinic at Mafoluku, Oshodi; Emmanuel Laboratory at 23 Hospital Road, Badagry; and Peace Lover Centre at Jofforo, Owode Apa Road, Badagry and other health facilities that are affected by the Agency's closure exercise.
The Commissioner stressed the need for all operators of health facilities operating in Lagos State to ensure that such facilities are duly registered and manned by qualified health personnel, ensure annual accreditation of all health facilities operating in the state, to enforce the availability and use of adequate and appropriate instruments/equipment in health facilities in the state and ensure that all the facilities conform with minimum health requirements and insist that the environment for dispensation of medical care is suitable for promoting and maintaining good health.
