Babangida Kakaki
Sokoto

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar III, said yesterday that the northern part of the country is under serious threat as a result of the fast collapsing legacies bequeath the region by the late Premier, Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello.

Expressing worry over the matter in a short remark during the opening of the Northern Traditional Councils' meeting with Northern Governors Forum at Lugard Hall, Kaduna, the Sultan said they have an onerous duty to reverse the ugly and unfortunate trends that retarded the region and impoverished the people over the years.

He said despite Bank of the North, which has now been dissolved, and out of the hands of the North, the entire region does not have vibrant financial institution to show for the last so-called bank consolidation.

The traditional ruler, who saw reason for the nation to accord them a constitutional role, said they were ready to make a case in the forthcoming constitutional amendment, so that they will have a role to play in the socio-political and economic aspects of the country.

In his speech, the Chairman of Northern Governors Forum, Dr Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu, tasked the traditional rulers to assist the political office holders in the implementation of the education and health summits.

He urged them to liaise with their political leaders in tackling the danger of food crises in their domains and marshal support for all the policies and programmes of the Yar'Adua Administration, especially the seven-point agenda and National Electoral Reform.

"I wish to advise you to be interested in and participate in the activities taking place in the local government areas. We are to advise political class in our domains about the right calibre of people to be elected into public offices.
