Angola: Huíla - Over 3,000 Adolescents Get Professional Training

19 June 2008

Lubango — At least 3,500 disadvantaged children and youths of shelter institutions of the Catholic Church in southern Huíla province will benefit, this year, from professional training courses financed by the government.

The information was granted on Wednesday in Lubango city by the minister of Assistance and Social Welfare, João Baptista Kussumua.

According to the official, the first phase of the programme, to be implemented by the government of Angola, shall be carried out in a period of five years, as result of a protocol signed with the Catholic Church.

During this period, the adolescents will attend courses of civil engineering and auto mechanics.

Minister Kussumua, who was speaking at a ceremony of handing over seven vehicles, 70 bicycles, 14 motorcycles, four different kits and three generators to the Lubango Archdiocese, did not reveal the date for the start of the project.

Still according to the official, these will serve to support the professional training process, since the church is an important partner of the government in the implementation of social programmes.

In Huíla province, the Catholic Church controls 4,000 needy children and youths, distributed into over 10 shelter homes.
