Fish, reptiles and plant lovers will have to wait for six months to enjoy their favourite pastime at the Nairobi Snake Park.

Popular with both local and international tourists, researchers and school groups, the park has been closed for expansion and renovations. The facelift is meant to transform the facility into a modern reptile park and a bigger tourist attraction.

It will have new animal showcases and interactive media equipment that will make it possible to listen to narrations about specific animals at the press of a button.

The animals have meanwhile, been moved to a section of the park where only reptile and fish experts will be allowed to visit.

The Nairobi Snake Park opened its doors to the public in January 1961 with the aim of educating visitors about common reptiles in the country and has over the years become a major tourist attraction.

All, however, is not lost. Those looking for something to do for the next six months can visit the newly renovated National Museum.

The museum now boasts additional space for 13 galleries, a visitors' facility, new exhibitions, site improvement and a coffee shop.

The opening of the museum after a long break offers one an opportunity to go up the hill and walk through Kenya's rich past.

The museum opened its doors in 1930 and was then known as the Coryndon Museum in honour of Sir Robert Coryndon, a one time governor of Kenya.

The newly renovated facility now has four permanent exhibitions, which include The Hall of Kenya, The Great Hall of Mammals, The Cradle of Humankind and The Cycles of Life in addition to other temporary exhibits.
