Cameroon: Cleft Lip Operation - Amina Can Now Smile

Choves Loh

19 June 2008

Little girl's beauty returns after hitch-free operation by Dr. Nguijoi Etienne.

The blessings of philanthropy and new Medical technology have given Amina Adamu a chance to good health after years of frustrations since she was born with a Cleft lip and palate 11 years ago in the Mbam neighbourhood of Fundong Sub division. Amina's congenital malformation was successfully operated free of charge by Dr. Nguijoi Etienne at a Clinic in Douala last May, 2008.

To thank for bank rolling the cost of the operation worth about cfa 400.000 is the "German Cleft Children Aid Society". Little Amina's family have been jumping for joy since she returned to Fundong some ten days ago with a message against the wild believe that the Cleft Lip and palate malformation is mystical.

Dr. Ntongsi Didier, Director of the Fundong District hospital who discovered and prepared Amina towards the operation told Cameroon Tribune that the malformation which affects children when they are still in the womb is often blamed on mystical happenings and many doubt their survival after birth. He dismissed the believe and acknowledged that operating such malformations in Cameroon have been less successful until recently with adequate equipment. Dr. Ntongsi says the German Cleft Children Aid Society which has played a front role in such operations has targeted many operations and possible follow ups with a message that the malformation can be treated. Dr. Ntongsi says they are preparing to reach out further on the field with pictures of the successful operation on Amina to encourage those suffering the malformation to step forward and be treated. Amina Adamu is a pupil of G.S Abeakang, Fundong Sub division. Dr. Nguijoi Etienne says it took barely a day in the theatre to operate the Cleft lip that initially took away Amina's beauty.
