Nigeria: Rainstorm Kills Four, Displaces Others in Kano

Ibrahim Shuaibu,

19 June 2008

Kano — Rainstorm has killed four people in Kanwa Village of Madobi local government area of Kano State over the weekend.

Also several houses were destroyed as the people in the area have been abandoned to their fate without receiving any attention from government.

Some of the people have been relocated to a nearby primary school where they are receiving assistance such as food items and other helpful materials from philanthropists around Kano metropolis.

CityStrings who visited the village observed that most families are now relying on fruits which are available at a garden belonging to a politician. He has directed the affected people to make do with it.

Some of the affected people told CityStrings that they could not still locate their children, due to the rainstorm, while their domestic animals also could not be seen. "Our lives are in danger as we are sleeping in open space," said Mati Isyaku Kanwa.

According to him, the incidence is natural which nobody can reject. But he appealed to government and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come to their aid, because of their poor condition.

While Aisha Musa lamented that all his properties has been lost to the rainstorm. The situation he said is the first time in the history of the village to encounter such an incident. He prayed that government should assist them on time.

But CityStrings gathered that no government official is helping matters, as most of them declined comments designed to help the victims.
