Nigeria/Equatorial Guinea: Yak, Ike Shoot Nigeria to Second Round

21 June 2008

Goals by Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Ike Uche either side of half time helped Nigeria to a 2-0 win, another clean sheet and qualification for the next round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and CAf African Nations Cup.

Yakubu swept into the roof of the net from Osaze Odemwingie's cross on the stroke of halftime, and Uche scored withing minutes of coming on, latching onto a raking ball from fellow substitute John Mikel Obi before twisting his marker one way and then another and hitting an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Danilo for Nigeria's second.

It was another uninspiring display from the Super Eagles, although they thoroughly dominated the visitors, who barely got a sniff of goal.

Yakubu, Kanu and Osaze on two occasions had opportunities to extend Nigeria's lead but missed from close range.

The win takes Nigeria to 12 points, eight ahead of both Sierra Leone and South Africa, who played out a goalless draw earlier in the day.
