Lagos — Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development Hajiya, Saudatu Bungudu, would by next month lead a delegation of Nigerian women to United Nations to defend the sixth country report on the implementation of CEDAW in Nigeria.

Disclosing this in Abuja, at a one-day national information and sensitization seminar by the ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC), the minister also appealed to the National Assembly to fast-track the process of passing the Bill into law.

According to her, though within nine years of democratic government in Nigeria, there has been a remarkable progress in the activities of women generally, the passage of the Bill will give the Nigerian women so much to desire.

"It is for this reason that Mr. President has approved for me to lead the Nigerian delegation to the United Nations next month, to defend the sixth country report on the implementation of CEDAW in Nigeria.

"Part of our report will include the promulgation of appropriate legislation and the setting up of other machineries to address trafficking, widowhood rites, female genital mutilation as some of the measures adopted to address unwholesome practices against women.

"Others will include our efforts at providing equal opportunities at all levels for women to contribute their quota to national development", she explained.

She however, urged EGDC to continue to devise programmes and projects that seek to bring about the emancipation of women in terms of sustainable development, peace and security in the region.
