Lagos — An Action Congress(AC) chieftain in Lagos state, Mr. Reuben Olorunfunmi Basorun, has faulted the membership of the Power Emergency Implementation Committee recently constituted by the National Economic Council(NEC) to monitor the investment in the power sector, saying Governors Olusegun Agagu of Ondo, Danjuma Goje of Gombe and Liyel Imoke of Cross River states have nothing to offer the committee.
NEC at its meeting on Thursday had approved the release of N1.2 trillion ($10.24 billion) from the excess crude account for the power sector and sharing by states and local governments.
The council also co-opted the three governors who had served as ministers of power into the implementation committee that will be supervised by Vice-president Goodluck Jonathan.
But speaking in a telephone chat with THISDAY in Lagos , weekend, Basorun said the governors have no business being in the committee as they had in the recent past failed the nation while serving as Power Ministers.
"We all know that two of the governors appointed to serve in the Committee, Agagu and Imoke, had been Ministers in charge of Power and they could not do anything to salvage the situation despite the massive funds at their disposal. The sector they headed is still being probed by the National Assembly and with the startling revelation from the probe, what new thing are they now expected to offer?, "he said.
According to Basorun, "Agagu and Imoke, as we all know, rather used their positions as Ministers of Power to prepare themselves for their current governorship positions at the expense of the nation as they could not do anything to sort out the power problem."
He added: "That the power problem remains as they met it and that it even got worse is enough indictment on their tenure."
The AC chieftain said it is obvious that the governors were appointed into the committee to cover up the mess perpetrated by them under the Obasanjo administration, as he asked why people would not take a cue from Funsho Kupolokun who had to bow out as Presidential Adviser upon the realisation that he had little left to offer.
