Kenya: Nairobi Athletes Miss Out On Olympic Qualification Time

Nairobi — No major surprises were recorded at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday as Nairobi-based athletes converged ahead of the national championship set for next Saturday.

Cynthia Cherop run a fast race but could not attain Olympic qualification time as she clocked 15:46.5 in 5,000m women's race.

Cherop shook off challenge from former world 10,000m champion Sally Barsosio and Christine Cheruto, but her pace slowed towards the end. She beat Cheruto to second in 15:53.3 while Barsosio was third in 15:58.3

In the men's 5,000m race, Isaac Macharia won in 13:49.0 ahead of John Mwangangi (13:55.0) while Sammy Karanja was third in 14:07.8.

In 10,000m, Paul Kosgei and Jackson Korio clocked 28:56.6 and 28:57.6 respectively to miss out on qualification rime. However, both were selected for the national championship.

Caren Waithera clocked 35:45.6 in the women's 10,000, which was five minutes slower than the Olympic qualifying time of 31:45.0. Eunice Mumbwa was second in 35:49.8 while Catherine Kwamboka was third in 36:02.5.

John Mwangi posted 1:49.2 in the men's 800m while Abraham Ngeno was second in 1:49.3 and Collins Naadokila was third 1:50.0.

In the women's 800m race, Doreen Chepkemoi beat Helen Obiri. Chepkemoi clocked 2:11.5 ahead of Obiri's 2:13.3 while Caroline Chelegat was third in 2:14.9.

Esther Wanjiku won the 1,500m race in 4:30.4, thwarting a late surge from Eunice Lucia 4:31.9. In the men's race, Joseph Ereng won in 3:46.4 ahead of Jeremiah Ndungu (3:48.6) and Geoffrey Ngeno (3:50.6).

Sebby Chelegat won the 3,000m steeplechase race in 10:52.0.
