Uganda: 'Dr Kiggundu Was a Freedom Fighter'

Buganda Kingdom and the Opposition parties have mourned the Friday death of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) National Chairman, Dr Sulaiman Kigundu describing him as a great personality who contributed towards the economic growth of the country.
Buganda's publicist Charles Mayiga said the kingdom has lost a strong pillar.
"It's a tragic death because he has been a reliable servant of the Kabaka. He died a little too early," Mr Mayioga said yesterday.
Dr Kiggundu, 61, died in South Africa's Donald Gordon Hospital where he succumbed to cancer.
The Democratic Party (DP) described Dr Kiggundu death as a big loss to the democratisation process of Uganda. DP's Legal Advisor and Kampala Central MP, Erias Lukwago said: "We shall always miss Kiggundu for his tremendous contribution toward the political and economic revival of this country. If there is anything Kiggundu has hated in this world, it's injustice," Mr Lukwago said, adding, "he unfortunately died still suffering under the yoke of injustice in this world".
DP Spokesperson Betty Namboze noted that Dr Kiggundu has been at the centre of reconciliation efforts between DP and FDC. Conservative Party president Ken Lukyamuzi said "the late Kiggundu will be remembered for his economic contribution towards the country despite government's deliberate decision to suppress his efforts".
He said, "It's a big loss despite his unrecognised contribution towards the economic growth of this country by the government".
Dr Kiggundu's body will be flown home on Monday and burial arrangements announced later.
Dr Kiggundu was Governor, central bank from 1986 to 1990.

With associates, Dr Kiggundu then established a private concern, Greenland Bank, and Green Group that briefly flourished before the bank was closed on April 1, 1999.
