Abuja — As part of efforts to promote good sanitary condition and hygienic practice in the country, the Minister of Environment, Housing and Urban Development, Halima Tayo Alao has called for a positive attitudinal and behavioral change among Nigerians to enhance their health and well being.

The Minister made the remarks in a keynote address presented at the North-west zonal campaign on hand washing held in Katsina.

Alao whose speech was read by the Director, Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management in the ministry, Baworu Yahaya, noted that the campaign was part of efforts by the present administration to institutionalise sound environmental sanitation practices amongst the populace by reawakening societal consciousness on the importance of hand washing in health promotion.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Minister, Mr. Clement Egbema the campaign is Nigeria's contribution to the global initiative aimed at promoting good hygiene and improved standards in public health.

Alao said Nigeria is joining the international community to create awareness on the issue of safe environment.

The Wife of the Kastina State governor, Hajia Fatima Shema said the state has already provided sanitation materials worth N20m to all the 361 wards of the 34 local government areas of the state.

According to her, the vision of the state was to make reasonable coverage in relation to the expected target of 61,996 latrines to be provided by communities, institutions and public places annually up to the year 2015 in the state. The North- west campaign is the first in the series of the hand wash, campaign in the six geo-political zones of the country.

It will be recalled that the First Lady, Hajia Turai Yar'Adua performed the national launch of the campaign last month.
