The FCT Administration from June 3 to June16, 2008, prosecuted 102 environmental offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.

The FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, disclosed this during last week's FCT Operational Department briefing at the Banquet Hall of the FCT Minister's House, Life-Camp, Abuja.

The Minister said that this action has become necessary to sanitise the environment and force some residents of the Territory to drop some habits detrimental to the environment.

Dr. Umar stated that the Abuja environment must conform with international standards if we must remain relevant as the conference centre of Africa as that will support our aspiration to make the city one of the twentieth greatest cities in the world by 2020.

According to him, the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, during the period under review, sealed-up 16 premises in the FCT and got their bench warrants executed.

"This is in addition to 22 abatement notices that were served for various environmental nuisances such as non-provision of waste bins, indiscriminate dumping of refuse and construction wastes at Maitama, Karu and Nyanya", Dr. Umar added.

The Minister revealed that the FCT Administration, during the period, repatriated 77 beggars from the capital city to their various states of origin.

He disclosed that the Administration treated 30 cases of sewer blockages and completed sewer maintenance works in Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse and Garki districts.

Dr. Umar remarked that the general maintenance work at Wupa Treatment Plant has increased its treatment capacity to 35,000m3 of waste water per day.

He further disclosed that if the Transfer Station at Mpape starts functioning, the FCT Administration will establish more of it at Ajata as well as in all the six Area Councils of the Territory to ensure that solid wastes are properly disposed.

The Minister emphasised that the FCT Administration will not rest on its oars until the territory is rid of all environmental problems which by extension, will increase the longevity of all residents of the Territory.
