Kampala — Small and Medium Enterprises are set to transform the economy through advanced computer production technology following yesterday's launch of computer refurbishment initiative in the country.
The initiative which is supported by a public-private partnership of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido), Microsoft Unlimited Potential Group and the government of Uganda will see the importation of used computers by Green Computers Uganda Limited and refurbishing them for the local market.
In President Museveni's speech read on his behalf by the Prime Minister, Prof Apollo Nsibambi, he acknowledged the importance of having an informed society.
"In order to spur true sustainable accelerated social and economic growth, it is imperative to have an informed society. A society where people of from all walks of life have access to information and hence knowledge to better their livelihoods, well being and contribution to the national aspirations," he said.
Chairman of Green Computers Uganda Limited Patrick Bitature appreciated the role played by Unido in choosing Uganda as the first country in Africa to launch the project of this kind.
He said the $0.5 million project will electronically analyse eight computers per refurbishing table, a process he said will help quicken the supply of refurbished computers to the market.
The computers will cost only Shs299,000.
The Vice-President of Microsoft Unlimited Potential Group, Mr Will Poole said his company will help introduce the use of local languages like Luganda into the computer usage so as to serve the local market.
