It is possible to eliminate poverty in Mozambique by using the country's natural resources to generate wealth, declared President Armando Guebuza on Saturday, as he inaugurated a mini-hydroelectric scheme in Barue district, in the central province of Manica.

According to a report in the Beira daily paper "Diario de Mocambique", Guebuza said that the immediate impact of the scheme will be to increase agricultural production through a new irrigation system, which was in line with government strategy to increase the area under cultivation and reduce farmers' dependence on rainfall.

The dam, in the locality of Honde, was built on the Mussambidzi river. It was an initiative of the Manica provincial government, and was financed by Germany to the tune of 250,000 euros (about 387,000 US dollars).

The work began in November 2005, and ended in March this year. The small power station can generate 80 kilowatts, which will benefit some 300 Honde households. The irrigation system depends on a channel 1,100 metres long carrying water to the fields.

"This is how natural resources, when properly used, can contribute to development", said Guebuza. "This river was always here. Our grandparents, our great-grandparents, and all their ancestors were born, lived and died here, while this river flowed past. This water that runs through here and is wasted in the sea always flowed here. But today, with knowledge and intelligence, we are making use of this water to improve our lives".

"This is a valuable and unequivocal contribution to the fight against poverty", he declared. People who previously had only heard of electricity, and whose only light at night had come from the stars, would now be able to illuminate their homes with power from the new dam.
