Sport wear and equipment manufacturers, Nike is supplying athletic shoes, apparel and sports equipments worth Frw30 millions to Association of Kigali Women in Sport (AKWOS).
Nike Risk Management Director, Lesley Kavanagh told Times Sport yesterday that the package is composed of uniforms, boots, and canvas shoes.
"We are supplying the equipments to AKWOS as part of the partnership deal we initiated two years ago.
"A container of Nike kits is on its way to Rwanda and is set to arrive in Kigali before the end of this week.
"We have been inspired by the role AKWOS is playing in developing women sports in Rwanda as well as the region," Kavanagh said.
Kavanagh further added that Nike's three-year contract with AKWOS which is set to expire next year would be extended because of what he describes as "fantastic and inspired work" done in developing women sports in the country and the region as a whole.
AKWOS president Felicite Rwemalika has expressed her gratitude for the continued support from Nike and vowed to implement further women sports development activities throughout the country.
According to Rwemalika, the kits will help in addressing key issues faced by AKWOS member teams.
AKWOS was founded in 1997 with the aim of reaching out to women through women football.
In a related development, Rwanda is hosting an international conference on women empowerment for social works through sports.
The two-day conference which started yesterday at La Palisse hotel has attracted Tanzania, Mali, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, DR Congo and Djibouti while Holland and USA.
