Nigeria: Durotoye, Upstages Fasuba

24 June 2008

Abuja — At Abuja International Athletics Grand Prix little known Adetoyi Durotoye provided the shock of Abuja Confederation of Athletics Associations (CAA) Grand Prix Monday when he defeated a strong 100m field that included reigning African champion and record holder at 9.85 seconds, Olusoji Fasuba, 2002 IAAF World Cup winner, Uchenna Emedolu, Uche Isaac, the 60m finalist at the 12th IAAF World Indoor championships and veteran sprinter and 2003 All Africa Games champion, Deji Aliu with a 10.14 personal best.

Durotoye has now set the stage for a titanic 100m battle next week at the 19th Mobil Track and Field Championships which will hold at the same venue. Interestingly, Durotoye's inclusion in the Nigerian 4x100m relay team in the finals of the African Athletics Championships in Addis Ababa last month was hotly disputed by Emedolu who argued that Onyeabor Nwogugu, one of the athletes in his stable who defeated Durotoye in the trials for the championships in Lagos should have been included in the relay team.
