Owerri — The traditional ruler of Nzerem autonomous community, Ehime Mbano local government area of Imo State, Eze John Mgbeahuru, has cried out over what he termed "bad network of roads, lack of good source of water, poor health facilities and the absence of other social amenities" in his area.
Speaking when he received, in audience, a team of UNICEF officers and journalists, who were in the community to inspect facilities executed by the organisation, the royal father said that maternal and child mortality would have been higher but for the intervention of UNICEF.
Our people still fetch water from ponds and slow flowing streams.
The sad thing is that human faeces flow into the stream, our only source of drinking water, during the rains, the royal father lamented. While saying that "this is not a healthy practice", Eze Mgbeahuru, however, commended UNICEF for the things already put in place by the United Nations body.
Child and maternal mortality has reduced in the community.
Immunization is still continuing in the community, courtesy of UNICEF, and birth registrationis also going on", Mgbeahuru said.
Also speaking, the Transition Committee Chairman of Ehime Mbano local council area, Sir Linus E. Emereonye, confirmed that a solar refrigerator donated by UNICEF to aid health facilities has been delivered to Nzerem community.
