Gambia: Bench, Bar Pledge to Supreme Court

Sanna Jawara

24 June 2008

In what can be described by many legal luminaries as a spirited assurance and cooperation of both the Bench and the Bar Association, senior members of the Judiciary have voiced their resolve to ensure the smooth operation of the Supreme Court.

As custodians of The Gambia's legal system, both the Bench and the Bar Association clearly reaffirmed their preparedness to enhance the justice delivery system.

In his address, Chief Justice Abdou Karim Savage spoke lengthily on the intention of the Supreme Court to sit regularly, every three months. "In fact, we intend to sit on a daily basis provided all the logistics are in place," he said.

Justice Savage used the opportunity to solicit for the cooperation of members of the Gambia Bar Association towards this direction.

Amie Bensouda, the president of the Gambia Bar Association, assured the gathering of the readiness and cooperation of members of the Bar towards the smooth functioning of the Supreme Court sittings, whenever the need arises.

For her part, Marie Saine Firdaus, the attorney general and secretary of state for Justice, extended warm and sincere welcome to the visiting delegation of Supreme Court judges, which comprises Justice Jones Botse of Ghana, Justice Mambilima of Zambia and Justice Niki Tobi of Nigeria.

Both the Bench and the Bar Association took the opportunity to extend heartfelt congratulations to Justice Jones Botse for her recent elevation as the vice chief justice and president of the Supreme Court of Ghana.
