Mozambique: Tete Hospital Manager Arrested for Embezzlement

Maputo — Thee manager of the main hospital in the western Mozambican province of Tete, named only as Oscar, has been under police custody since last week, accused of stealing 124,000 meticais (about 5,000 US dollars) from the institution's coffers.

It is not yet clear what scheme Oscar used to misappropriate the money, or how the theft was uncovered, but Pedro Cossa, spokesperson for the general police command, cited in Tuesday's issue of the daily paper "Noticias", said in Maputo on Monday that the fact that an investigating magistrate has formalised his detention means that there is enough evidence against Oscar.
