STUDENTS should be equipped with fire fighting skills to combat the current wave of fire outbreaks in schools, the Buganda Katikkiro has urged.

John Bosco Walusimbi said while more schools were cropping up, students' safety was not being addressed fully.

A spate of fire outbreaks, in both primary and secondary schools, has continued to occur, with the most grisly being the burning of a dormitory at Budo Junior School that killed 20 pupils.

Walusimbi implored schools to be armed with fire-fighting gadgets. "Pupils should also go through fire-fighting drills. This is now a challenge to schools. We don't want any more fire outbreaks (in schools)," he said.

Walusimbi was presiding over celebrations to mark the 66th College Day at Trinity College, Nabbingo recently.

Walusimbi also commissioned the ground floor of a sh734m state-of-the-art block that will house over 250 A' Level students.

Old Girls Joanita Kawalya and Mariam Ndagire added colour to the celebrations by performing local Luganda songs.

Walusimbi urged parents and teachers to nurture students' talents.

"If it is music, nurture that talent. You never know where it will land that student."

Christopher Kakooza, the Auxiliary Bishop of Kampala Archdiocese, who marks 25 years in priesthood this year, urged schools to train God-fearing students.

"I urge you to rise to higher heights and, to parents, I say thank you for your sacrifice; it is not easy to keep a child at school," he said.
