Nigeria: Sokoto to Take 400 Athletes to Kada 2008

About 400 athletes and officials will represent Sokoto at the forthcoming 16th National Sports Festival in Kaduna in November.

Alhaji Aminu Shagari, the Special Adviser on Sports to Gov. Aliyu Wamakko, told said in Sokoto that the state would take part in 14 sports in the biennial fiesta.

Shagari said the state would participate in three team sports, football, handball and cricket. Shagari, a polo enthusiast, said Sokoto qualified in the three team sports at the zonal qualifiers held last month in Gusau.

He disclosed that it was the first time the state qualified in football at the festival.

Other events in which the state would field athletes are, dambe (local boxing), weightlifting, kokawa (local wrestling), athletics, badminton, langa, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, judo and wrestling.

The special adviser said the athletes had begun training and were in high spirit, adding that he was optimistic that Sokoto would do well at the games.
