South Africa: Non-Agricultural Sector Employment Up By 0.1 Percent

Pretoria — South Africa's employment rate in the formal non-agricultural sector has recorded an increase of 0.1 percent between December 2007 and March 2008.

Employment increased from 8 410 000 in December 2007 to 8 418 000 employees when compared with March 2008 according to the March 2008 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) report released by the Statistics South Africa on Tuesday.

In the same quarter the report found that gross earnings paid to employees in the same sector decreased by -2.8 percent.

"According to the March 2008 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended March 2008 (January 2008 to March 2008) amounted to R234 917 million.

This represents a quarterly decrease of R6 652 million (or -2,8 percent) compared with the quarter ended December 2007 (October 2007 to December 2007)," reads the report.

The QES survey is a quarterly survey covering a sample of approximately 24 000 private and public enterprises in the formal non-agricultural business sector of the South African economy.

The information received is used to estimate key economic statistics on employment and gross earnings, and is used as an input to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data.

Employment in the same sector increased annually by 2.1 percent or 174 000 people from an estimated 8 244 000 employees.

Gross earnings paid increased by R29 725 million or 14.5 percent from the quarter ending March 2007 to the quarter ending in March 2008.

Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, showed a quarterly decrease of 0.9 percent between November 2007, when it was at R8 752, to February 2008, when it was estimated at R8 677.

Annually the figure however increased by 10.3 percent with the average payment in February 2007 being an estimated R7 870 to the February 2008 figure of R8 677.
