Nigeria: Union Petitions EFCC, ICPC Over Alleged N6 Million Fraud

Abuja — The Amalgamated Union of Public Coorperation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPTRE), an affiliate of NLC has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), David Mark, Senate President and Dimeji Bankole, Speaker, House of Representatives over alleged misappropriation of N6 million in Women Development Center.

The union is urging the anti-graft Commission to investigate Aisha Mahmood, Director-General of National Women Development Center to explain the where about of the said amount which they believe is in her possession.

The union in a three-page petition titled, "Re: Gross mismanagement and misappropriation of public funds in National Centre for Women Development, Abuja dated June 18, 2008, accused the DG of involving in questionable financial transaction".

The receipt of the letter was also confirmed by a top official of EFCC who acknowledged the receipt of the petition on Monday, June 23, 2008.

Investigation further revealed that the petition has been sent to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives and Saudatu Bungudu, Minister of Women Affairs.

The petition reads in part: N5,187,293.08 was withdrawn without due process from the Centre's salary account with First Inland Bank, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja with cheque No 01449279 dated 14/11/06 in favour of the Center's former Revenue Officer, Usman Danjuma..
