Nigeria: Governor Orji Rewards Informant With N1m

25 June 2008

Abia — Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State in Umuahia fulfilled his promise to reward anyone with information that would lead to the arrest of kidnappers.

Orji gave N1 million to an informant, who gave information that led to the arrest of three suspected kidnappers in Umuahia.

He said that his administration was determined to rid Abia of criminal activities, specially kidnapping.

Orji, who noted that seven suspected kidnappers had been arrested by the Police in the state, asked the Commissioner of Police to prosecute the suspects immediately.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Emmanuel Ezeozue, who brought the Informant to the Government House, Umuahia, said he provided information about some people, who were planning to kidnap a woman.

"He told me that he was drinking in a beer parlour and overheard four boys perfecting strategy on how to kidnap one woman in Port Harcourt," the commissioner said.

He said he was informed by the informant that the boys later had difficulty in securing a vehicle for the operation and where to keep their victim.

"I told him to go back and pretend as if he was joining them in the crime and to also promise to provide them with a vehicle and a place to keep her," Ezeozue further said.

The commissioner said while the discussion was going on, the housemaid of the woman to be kidnapped brought information to the gang that the woman had gone back to Port Harcourt.

"Since we were determined to arrest them on the line of their duty, we decided that the informant suggest another target since the first target was no more," he said.

He said the group followed the suggestion and decided to kidnap a male guest of Abia Hotels.

Ezeozue said the Police provided a vehicle to be used in the operation after which the suspects went to their hideout to take ammunition for the operation.

He said the Police laid an ambush and arrested three of the four suspects and recovered three pistols from them.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the informant was masked to conceal his identity.(NAN)
