Nigeria: Adamawa PDP Condemns Lawmakers Over Impeachment

Lagos — ADAMAWA State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has condemned, in strong terms, the state House of Assembly for initiating impeachment moves against Governor Murtala Nyako.

The party, which rose from an extra-ordinary meeting in Yola yesterday, described the unfolding scenario to the impeachment moves as unfortunate and misguided on the part of the state legislators.

The chairman of the party, Alhaji Mijinyawa Kugama, said party procedures were not followed in serving notice on the governor. "Both the Governor and the House of Assembly members are bonafide members of the PDP.

Therefore, whatever grievance the Assemblymen hold against the governor, the party, which is supreme, should have first been intimated for intervention and possible resolution, Kugama observed. This, he added, the House refused to do, saying that an issue that can be amicably discussed and resolved with the party was allowed to go public to the stage of impeachment.

The party chairman described the action of the lawmakers as morally and politically wrong and a calculated attempt to dent the image of the governor.

Kugama also described the action of the Assembly members as hasty, malicious, misguided and deliberate attempt to cause mischief in the state.

"As for the conduct of the party primary, which is the borne out of contention for the impeachment saga, it was the party and not the governor that carried out the exercise.

So the party expected the lawmakers to have channeled their complains to the PDP and not witch-hunt the governor;" he Stated. Alhaji Mijiyawa Kugama told the Assembly members to immediately withdraw their impeachment notice in the interest of peaceful co-existence, mutual understanding and respect for the rule of law in Adamawa State.
