Brand Manager (Nestle Milo), Mr. Femi Akintola has praised the teamwork and cooperation shown by participants that have accounted for the huge successes recorded at the annual Nestle Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championships over the last 10 years.
Akintola made the remarks at the finals of the Savannah Conference of the championship, which took place at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.
He recalled that the championship started 10 years ago with only 500 schools across the country, but today the championship has expanded so much that over 5, 000 schools now take part in the annual event. "The joy of Nestle Milo is that some of the products of the championship are now playing for Nigeria, while some others are playing professional basketball outside the country" Akintola said.
He added that apart from catching the talented players at a very young age, there is also an opportunity for the organisers to select the Top 50 from the participants at the conference who will move into the Nestle Milo/NBA Top 50 camp, where the players will receive special training from experienced basketball players and scouts from the NBA.
Meanwhile, the head coach of the Kaduna state team, Mallam Sani Turi has advised the organisers to use only the best set of referees throughout the conference and for the finals billed for Lagos.
Turi's team lost the male title to the home-based Kano team, Army Day Secondary School, Kano by 43-40 points at the conference final.
