Nigeria: Community Condemns Attack On Oil Facilities

The entire leadership of the Benikrukru and Kenyangbene (Abiteye), in Warri South-West Local government Area of Delta State yesterday condemned, in the strongest terms, the recent attack on Chevron facilities at Abiteye Field. The two communities emerging from an emergency meeting yesterday, decried the attack on Chevron facilities, saying they would assist, through all acceptable methods in trying to find solution to the incident.

According to them, as communities that were truly committed to the three-point agenda of the Delta State Government and the positive postures of the Federal Government, they would continue to support all efforts aimed at addressing the very many problems in the Niger Delta region. In a statement signed by Joseph O. Wuruyai, Chairman of Benikrukru community, Elijah Odudu, Chairman of Kenyangbene community and 19 others; they stated that while their communities are in dire need of Chevron, State Government and Federal Government's attention in addressing crucial problems like the sand filling/piling of their communities that are being threatened by the exploration and exploitation activities of Chevron for over four decades now, they cannot support any inimical activities to actualize such legitimate/constitutional right of their people.

They said their communities stood for the peaceful resolution of all outstanding issues between them and Chevron especially as contained in their letter of June 9, 2008 to the Chairman/Managing Director of Chevron, adding that they also stood by all the resolutions reached "but not through the use of unconstitutional means that can rob the nation of her sources of revenue.

"They appealed to the Delta State and Federal Government to prevail on the authorities of Chevron to urgently address the long over due issue of sand filling/piling and road network of their communities immediately and for Chevron to be more friendly and show genuine concern about the development in all her Oil/Gas host communities "as this remain one of the surest ways of addressing the Niger Delta question."
