Kampala — She took the local fashion scene by storm when she pioneered the Uganda International Fashion Week. Last year, she sold out all her designs at the Uganda North America Association convention in San Francisco, USA.

Today, Santa Anzo is breaking into Paris in France, the undisputable fashion capital of the world. At the recent UNESCO Africa Week festivities, Anzo not only received a standing ovation from the 1,500 participants for her designs, but was also booked to start selling her outfits at the prestigious Concorde Lafayette Hotel in Paris. The UNESCO Africa Week is held from May 22 to May 31 every year.

It celebrates African art, paintings, music, dance, drama, film, food and fashion. All the 54 African countries were represented at the function hosted by Joseph Olabiyi Babalola, the chairman of UNESCO. Ugandans showcased traditional dishes like Katogo and Luwombo, and the Bakisimba, a traditional Kiganda dance. They also hosted a 10-minute fashion show that was the grand finale. This was the Arapapa fashion show that wowed the French capital. "The theme of the fashion show was Languages: The African Woman and Child' and all my clothes said just that. I did not show the traditional stuff like barkcloth and gomesi. Instead, I brought out the trendiest cuts and designs that expressed how modest and innocent an African woman and child can be," says Anzo.

Her signature outfit of the night was a long red dress with a gold collar and gold waistband. But most of the outfits were in black and white with African prints and embroidery. "We also plan to showcase our clothes in Milan, Italy in October," says Anzo.
