Nigeria: Ekiti House Reconvenes for 30 Minutes in Darkness

Lagos — EKITI State House of Assembly yesterday reconvened to commence the second legislative session, summoning the already-screened members of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) to appear before it next Monday for affirmation.

The House only sat for 30 in the dark as there was power outage which forced them to adjourn till Monday, June 30, in a motion moved by the Leader of Government Business, Mr. Lai Oke and seconded by Mr. Abiola Olowookere

The House hurriedly adjourned two months ago, following fracas that erupted over the composition of the SIEC members who are mainly Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the house, a development that polarised the assembly.

The PDP lawmakers had convened at the Assembly at 7 a.m. on April 29 and effected the screening of the SIEC nominees that had been stalled following criticisms that had trailed its composition.

Addressing the lawmakers, Speaker of the House, Mr. Femi Bamisile, commended them for their diligence, steadfastness and robust debate of issues in the first legislative session.

Bamisile argued that the state House of Assembly remained the best and the most- productive in the country, having passed the highest number of bills into law.

According to him, "The expectation is very high and we have to work hard to keep the tempo going. We are to legislative for the well-being of our people and we should not fail in this regard."

"I acknowledge the good job of all the members of this assembly in the first session, which had bought us to this level and we have to double our efforts so that we will not fail in giving the people the necessities of live

"Despite that our job is tedious, tasking and require some sacrifices, we had remained steadfast, diligent and kept our integrity intact, I urge my people to continue in this stead," he said.
