Dutse — No fewer than 3,000 people in Jigawa State have lost their homes while properties and livestock estimated at millions of Naira have been destroyed as a result of heavy rains in the state in recent times.
The special assistant to the governor under the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Alhaji Lawan Oliya told Daily Trust yesterday that the state was confronted with a situation that has surmounted the ability of the state government, lamenting the inability of affected victims of last years flood to receive assistance from the Federal Government.
He said the state government on its part had done the best it could to manage the situation, but observed that the nonchalant attitude of the people and the foot dragging of the Federal Government in rendering assistance to disaster victims constitute serious problem to the agency.
"Disasters are imminent anywhere in the world, even in most advanced countries in Europe, however the situation in this country is how we are able to manage the few ones that happen here which is the more reason why victims suffer unnecessarily", said the Special Assistant.
