About 1.8 million children, under fiver years old, were vaccinated against poliomyelitis in the country's capital, Luanda, during the three-day campaign that started on June 20, exceeding the expected 1.7 million children, ANGOP leant this Friday.

According to the co-ordinator of the Vaccination Programme, Elisabeth Gourgel, the second phase of the national vaccination campaign in Luanda was very satisfactory, as it surpassed the expectation of local health officials.

The achieved figure resulted to the cooperation of parents during the campaign and sensitisation and vaccination work that involved Angolan firms, schooling institutions, associations, amongst other volunteers, emphasized the official.

During the first half of 2008, 17 cases of poliomyelitis were diagnosed in the country, with Luanda province recording 12.
