At least 166 people were reported dead in the south-eastern Kuando Kubango province, from January to May this year, victim of malaria, informed Thursday the local supervisor of Malaria Programme in the region, Juliana Lopes Kanjuluca.

Speaking to the press, the official said that during the abovementioned period, the province's nine districts have recorded 28,019 cases of malaria, mostly involving children and pregnant women.

According to her, the first quarter was the period that the province reported many malaria cases due to heavy rains.

To avert the situation, health officials have embarked on the distribution of drugs and insecticide-treated-mosquito nets for pregnant women and children under five years of age.
