Nairobi — Members of the Sabaot Land Defence Force and their financiers will be given amnesty if they turn themselves in, Western provincial commissioner Abdul Mwasera has said.
However, Mr Mwasera said those militias and financiers who will wait until security personnel arrest them will face prosecution.
Speaking at Kapendo forest in Cheptais Division during a peace tree-planting ceremony yesterday, Mr Mwasera said the joint security operation by the army, General Service Unit, regular and Administration Police, had so far recovered 98 guns and 1,200 rounds of ammunition.
Surrender
He appealed to residents to surrender illegal arms, saying the district had too many guns.
The PC said the operation had scored a major success after the arrest of the main SLDF suspects, including Matakwei's successor, Stephen Juma Kirui. He urged militia spokesman John Kanai to leave his Mt Elgon forest hideout and surrender.
The SLDF had been accused for killing hundreds of people over a land dispute.

Muite should take a more prominent role as the thieves dissapear back into the bushes of the mountains and to all that we must add Ringera's and Kalonzo's (complacent?)… [Read Full Text]
