Africa: Citizen, Isaac Becomes Apprentice Africa

Isaac,a Ghanaian, born and bred in Ghana with a Bachelors degree in Publishing and an MBA from the Wuana University of Technology in China has become the winner of the business reality show, Apprentice Africa and goes home with the well promoted $200,000 as prize money.

Isaac who lived in China for three years, spending time in various cities, like Beijing and Shanghai became the last man standing at the eighteen week job interview winning Eunice and the rest of the contestants.

Wave making Bank PHB and all its lieutenants are very excited that it ended in style. Television viewers who made the programme their daily viewing diet on their own part also feel that some thing would be missing in their lives.

Francis Atuche, MD/CEO of the bank says "it is another promise fulfilled, to inspire African youths to believe in themselves and achieve the "impossible".

The show which was beamed all over the nation and other televisions in Africa as produced by Nigeria's foremost television production company, Storm Vision came to a dramatic end on Tuesday night with a tense battle between the two finalists, Isaac, Ghanaian based in Ghana and Eunice, a Nigerian based in the United States of America.

After 17 weeks which had seen the elimination of 16 contestants, eight men and eight women from six different African countries, it was left to these two to see who will land the plum $200,000 (N24 million) per annum job with Bank PHB, the title sponsors of the Apprentice Africa.

The seventeen weeks saw all the contestants handle different tasks from the very basics like arranging a garden in The Apprentice Africa mansion, to branding and selling groundnuts, or soccer balls on the streets of Lagos or exotic business task like route to market strategy for Celtel Nigeria red phones or striking deals with the major dealers of Tetmosol, a major antiseptic soap in the Nigerian market.

Finally facing the CEO on Tuesday night were two contestants who for the first time were not afraid of being fired but rather were tense with suspense wondering who among the two of them will be hired for one of Africa's highest paying jobs.

The profiles of the two candidates facing the CEO were as diverse as their personalities and gender.

Eunice was born in the United States of America to Nigerian parents.

A managing partner in an investment managment company in New York, she has a bachelor's degree in Economics and a master's degree in Real Estate.

She has also worked for companies in the UK, China, and Lagos, Nigeria. Eunice was second runner up in the Miss Nigeria beauty pageant held in America. Before coming on the Apprentice Africa show, Eunice and four other partners ran an investment company which raised capital to fund residential developments in China.

On the Apprentice Africa, Eunice showed herself to be aggressive and smart with little patience for those she regards as lazy or slow. She earned a reputation as master of the board room.

She faced the CEO in the board room seven times and survived all the seven, a no mean feat considering most contestants did not survive their first experience in the boardroom. Eunice was the project manager in three different business tasks. She led her team to victory in two of those tasks and lost one.

Before coming on the Apprentice Africa, Isaac worked as a customer accounts manager in a technology firm in Ghana. On the show, Isaac portrayed his personality as a strategist, always coming with the winning ideas in whatever group he found himself.

His quiet way of getting his views across which he describes as "tactful aggression," ensured he did not step on toes in getting his views across and became a generally likable person among fellow contestants. It is therefore not surprising that Isaac had to dare the boardroom only three times. His leadership abilities also seemed to have been confirmed by the fact that he won three of four business tasks he had to lead as project manager.

To pick the best candidate, the CEO asked Isaac and Eunice to make a pitch for the job on why they should become his Apprentice.

Eunice took the opportunity to cite her global training and experience as making her the best candidate for the job while Isaac used the opportunity to go on the defensive on an earlier description by the CEO that he comes across as being "laid back".

At the last show, the CEO also went ahead to review how the contestants performed in their last business task in which he asked that they create an experiential marketing framework for Bank PHB. In executing the task, the CEO had asked both of them to employ three of their former co-contestants to help them execute the task.

The CEO picked holes in the outcome of the task. First he noted that Matrix, which was led by Eunice had shown up in T-Shirts to execute the task, making it look too casual for a corporate set up.

Besides, the Eunice design also took Bank PHB to the past which Bank PHB was never part of, considering it is a second generation new generation bank.

The CEO also picked holes in Isaac's presentation noting that he allowed the MC of the occasion to talk about the bank's products, when it should have been done by the Bank's representatives on the floor.

Things became more interesting however, when the CEO asked co-contestants to openly express their opinion who they believe should be the Apprentice between Eunice and Isaac.

However, most of the contestants rooted for Isaac while some others voted for Eunice.

With all their comments taken, the CEO was quick to warn the contestants, "Your comments and opinion will in no way affect my decision on whom I hire today".

But the die was cast and there was little surprise from the packed hall when the CEO announced Isaac as his Apprentice for the $200,000 per annum job.

There was a standing ovation from the audience in the hall made up of captains of industry, Bank PHB executives including its Managing Director, Francis Atuche as well as members of the media.

So came a dramatic climax to a great show that most analysts have described as the best business school on television.
