Nairobi — Peter Mathenge, the newly-crowned Kenya Regiment Rifle Club full-bore shooting champion, was named in a strong national team for the United Kingdom Bisley that leaves for England next week.

The seven-time champion is in experienced company that also has two-time champion Edward Legei, veteran Satiender Sehmi, Evans Odeo, Methuselah Cheruiyot and Elijah Kimisik. There are upcoming shooters including Jotham Mwebia, John Serem and Christopher Saina.

On arrival in London, the shooters will barely have time to rest before competing in a friendly match, a Royal Airforce invitational at the Stony Castle Range in East London on July 7. This is one of the build-up shoots before the UK Bisley starts on July 12 to 27. The team was selected after the Kenya Open championship at Stoni Athi Range last weekend where Mathenge beat a strong field of over 64 shooters.

Mathenge scored 137-12 at 1,000 metres that featured 16 shooters. He edged out Legei of Presidential Escort Unit and Paul Munene of 50th Air Calvary. Emerging shooter Joyce Chebii finished ninth overall.

At 900 metres it was Legei who led on the Grand Aggregate on 966-7. Satiender Sehmi was second on 958-58 and Mathenge had 956-64. He turned on the heat at 1,000 to edge out Legei. "Shooting starts at 1,000 metres," is all he said after completing the feat.
