The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the National Chairman of the party, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor-led National Working Committee (NWC) may be heading for a confrontation over the reconstitution of the Edo State executives of the party.
The party's NWC had ruled that the Chief Anthony Anenih faction produce the state chairman of the party as well as the state treasurer, while the Governor Osarehiem Osunbor group produce the state deputy chairman and state secretary of the party.
But the governor's faction is said to be uncomfortable with the decision.
Not satisfied, the governor's faction appealed to the BoT of the party.
Last Thursday, the BOT chaired by Obasanjo ruled that the matter be sent to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party for the final resolution of the crisis.
The Thursday's BoT meeting was attended among others by all the stakeholders of the party including Obasanjo and Anenih.
Ogbulafor and the National Secretary of the party, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, also attended the meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
But yesterday, the NWC released a statement jointly signed by Ogbulafor and Baraje stating that the crisis in the state had been resolved.
The statement went further to release names of members of the new PDP executive in the state.
According to the statement, a known Anenih loyalist, Mr. Solomon Ekhabafe, was named state chairman and Chief Clement Edo-Osagie, deputy chairman.
Others are state secretary- Felix Utubar and treasurer, Chief Vincent-Oguns.
But in a swift reaction last night, the Chief of Staff to the Edo State governor, Isaiah Osifor, disclaimed the new executive, stating that they were unacceptable to the faction.
Osifor said: "On Thursday, the Board of Trustees ruled that the matter be referred to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party. We are surprised at what the NWC is doing. They should allow the NEC to intervene in this matter as directed by the BoT which is the conscience of the party."
In the NWC statement, however, the committee said despite the directive of the BoT, "It will be recalled that the NWC has been taking a number of measures to douse the differences that erupted in Edo State PDP.
"Among such approaches are the series of meetings held severally between the two major factions. It is worthy to note that at the last of such meetings which was held between the NWC members and the two factions brought together at the party secretariat on June 26, 2008, the NWC decided as follows:
"That the NWC has patiently listened to and has thoroughly gone through write-ups from the two factions and stakeholders in PDP Edo State respectively.
"That the factions have agreed with the arrangements and decisions of the NWC in its bid to settle the rift finally and for PDP in Edo State to make progress.
|
"In the interest of peace and tranquility in the Edo PDP the executives from the two warring factions were harmonised and offices were shared equally, both at the state and local government levels of the party."
