Nigeria: Agency to Check Export of Commodities

Head of the Federal Produce Inspection Service in Lagos, Mr Rufus Akinrodolu, has said the service has been strengthened to prevent illegal export of commodities to the international market.

Akinrodolu said the goods smuggled out of the country did not go through quality test.

He urged exporters to ensure that commodity for export meet the required grading and

standards of the importing country.

"Our steps to ensure that commodity smuggling is checkmated is in line with the Federal

Government's resolve to make agriculture the backbone of the nation's economy," he said.

He listed the challenges facing produce inspection in the country to include lack of funds, inadequate skilled manpower as well as logistics. Akinrodolu advised importers to always ensure that produce were kept in good warehouse, adopt periodic spraying and fumigation of storage facility with approved international standard chemical.According to him, these efforts will make the produce to be free of insects and moisture while awaiting shipment.
