Uganda: Rwenzururu Palace Works Halted

Kampala — THE construction of a rival palace by one of the claimants of the Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu (Bakonzo and Bamba kingdom), Swaleh Tibamwenda Basikania, has been halted.

Basikania's supporters were building the palace on Katswabwemi hill in Bughoye sub-county, Kasese district.

However, the ridge leader of Kastwabwemi, Alon Muhindo, and the sub-county leadership stopped the works last week.

"I do not know Basikania and he does not own a plot in this area. How can he construct his self-styled palace here?" Muhindo asked.

During an interview in Kasese on Friday, he challenged Basikania to prove when he was proclaimed the king of the Bakonzo and the Bamba.

Bughoye sub-county chairman Saulo Maate also said Basikania did not own land in the area.

Basikania is one of four claimants to the throne of the kingdom whose members inhabit the south-western districts of Kasese and Bundibugyo. Others are Charles Wesley Mumbere, Robert Tibamwenda and Ibrahim Makoma.
