Nairobi — A torrid KCB Safari rally for Ugandan drivers concluded with Emmanuel Katto limping to 18th place yesterday. Katto broke his front suspension and was nursing the car all along after a gruelling 671 kilometres that took rally machines to Rift Valley and Eastern Province.
"I had many problems that saw me rely on luck to finish the rally. I am contented with that position and I shall put my new machine into a more workable condition for future rallies," Katto said at the end of the race.
Katto was the only driver from Uganda remaining in the gruelling event after Riyaz Kurji and Jas Mangat crashed out on Saturday. Despite finishing in 18th place, Katto was ninth among the ARC challengers.
A Nakuru wheat farmer Lee Rose defied all odds to capture his maiden KCB Safari Rally title.
Driving his new Mitsubishi Evo 9 machine which was shipped in recently from England, the Kenyan managed to adjust to the new car and made personal history after decades of futile attempts in the rally.
