The Parents Teachers Association, PTA, of Government Bilingual High School, GBHS, Kumba, at a general assembly, June 25, endorsed the new law on PTA.

The parents unanimously agreed to follow and apply the new PTA text in the 2008/2009 academic year.It would be recalled that the Minister of Secondary Education, Louis Mbapes Mbapes, had on February 25, issued a new text of application for PTAs operating in government secondary schools.

According to some of the innovations, teachers would not be part of PTA executive, meanwhile the local administration, the police and gendarmes would be part of the PTA.

Explaining the text, GBHS Principal, Charles Mukete Njintcho, said it was issued following several petitions from parents to the Ministry on alleged embezzlement of PTA funds.

Njincho also said the idea of bringing Divisional Officers into the PTA is for the interest of parents because they would supervise the execution of projects. He stated that the police and gendarmes would ensure the smooth functioning of the association, sending reports to hierarchy.

Njintcho further told parents that most politicians in town would want to bring politics into the schools. He said with the administration, police and gendarmes such would be eradicated.

The principal recalled that in 2005, they had a well constituted PTA but their deliberations were annulled by the Divisional Delegate for Secondary Education Meme.

He reminded parents that if the DO or forces of law and order had been there, they would have made their reports to justify that their action was correct.Speaking to The Post, Njintcho said the argument by some schools against the text is baseless. According to him, it would curb corruption and embezzlement in schools.

He said the PTA won't pay the DO and the forces of law and order any money for fuel as some parents feared. The principal reminded the parents that an instruction from the minister need not debated, but implemented.

One of the parents, Foukam, said he was happy with the new law that excludes teachers from posts of responsibilities. He said teachers usually connive with principals to embezzle funds.
