Somalia: AU to Table Report During Egypt Summit

The African Union Peace and Security Council has prepared a report about the humanitarian and security situation in Somalia.

The report says that there was a significant development following a recent peace deal in Djibouti between the Somali Transitional Government and [opposition] Alliance for Re-liberation of Somalia.

The report will be tabled to the African Union summit that is taking place in Sharm al-Shaykh town in Egypt.

It highlights the significance of the Djibouti peace deal brokered by the UN Security Council with the support of the AU and the international community.

The report says the provision on ceasing of military operations within 30 days starting from the day the deal was signed was very important, as well as the issue of deployment of international forces to Somalia.

In this report, the international community is required to commit itself to making efforts towards the enforcement of the Somalia reconciliation process and to hasten the deployment of international peacekeepers to Somalia.

The report also encourages the involvement in the deal of other factions that were not included in Djibouti peace process.

The Peace and Security Council is in its report demanding that African leaders attending today's summit in Egypt take stern action to implement the Somali peace deal signed on 9 June.
