INDUSTRIALIST, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Tony Elumelu and Mr. Arnold Ekpe, Chief Executive Officers of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc and Ecobank Plc, respectively, top the list of Africa's business leaders' and companies' nominees for the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC)-Africa Business Awards 2008.

They were short-listed for Business Leader Award. Nominees for the Best Business Women of the Year include Managing Director/CEO of Oceanic Bank International Plc, Mrs. Cecilia Ibru; Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Prof. (Mrs.) Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, and Managing Director of Bank of Industry, Ms. Evelyn Oputu.

The winners would be announced on July 3 at the Governor House Hotel, London, by the organizers of the award, IC Publications in conjunction with CBC.

The awards celebrate the rapidly transforming business landscape in Africa and reward entrepreneurial excellence and best practices across a wide range of business sectors through 16 different categories.

The organizers said in a statement that winners would have greatly contributed in developing new markets and achieved strong and sustained corporate performance in terms of profits and capital growth, transforming perceptions of Africa in the global market and displaying high standards of good corporate citizenship.

The statement further said that the awards would recognize the efforts of the global business community in fulfilling their social responsibility with regards to delivering social and economic benefits to local communities.

They awards also recognize awardees' contributions towards achieving gender equality, promoting Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and creating innovative business models which would empower communities through civic engagement, economic development and the global business community.

The judging panel comprises the CEO of Investment Climate Facility for Africa, Mr. Omari Issa, President of Allafrica Global Media, Mr. Amadou Mahtar Ba, and President, African Export-Import Bank, Mr. Jean-Louis Ekra, among others.

Speakers at the event will include Prime Minister Ephraim Inoni (Cameroon), Lord Malloch Brown, minister of state (Foreign Commonwealth Office), Paul Skinner, chairman (CBC and Rio Tinto), Senator Mohammed Sanusi Daggash (minister, Nigeria) and Pascal Dozie, chairman, Africa Investor Club (Nigeria), among others.

The CBC-Africa Business Awards is held in conjunction with the Africa Business Forum 2008, before the G8 summit in Japan.
