GURI Ethiopian troops deployed in parts of central Somalia came under heavy fire Tuesday as they traveled the major north-south highway, Radio Garowe reported.

The Ethiopian army convoy left the town of Guri El, in Galgaduud region, and was traveling south towards Hiran region when Islamist rebels ambushed them, igniting a bloody battle where artillery and rockets were used.

Scores of residents in the town of Mataban fled their homes as the fighting raged between the rebels and the Ethiopian soldiers.

Medical sources at Istarlin Hospital in Guri El confirmed to Radio Garowe that 10 wounded civilians - including children - were admitted since Monday night.

Abdirahim Isse Addow, a spokesman for the Islamic Courts, said their side lost six fighters during the fierce battle.

But he claimed that Ethiopian forces suffered "heavy losses," including two military trucks that were burned.

The claim could not be independently verified, since the fighting took place in a remote area and the Ethiopian army does not have a media spokesman to speak about operations in Somalia.

Ethiopian forces have come under attack everyday since arriving in Guri El over the weekend.
