Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Grace Ekpiwhre has assured that the Federal Government will encourage and promote further research in the field of Stem-Cell Technology because of its critical role in enhancing our health care delivery system.
Ekpiwhre who stated this during the inauguration and first technical meeting of the National Committee on the Research and Application of Stem Cell transplanting technology in Nigeria at the weekend said because of the ethical dimension and social uncertainty surrounding the Stem Cell research, the committee is expected to leverage its use and application in Nigeria and beyond.
Stem Cell was discovered by Dr. James A. Thompson a biologist at the University of Wisconsin in the United States. It is used to repair, injured and debilitated tissues and organs of the body which is Stem Cell therapy. It is also a medicine of regeneration.
In statement signed by the minister's chief press secretary, Abdulganiyu Aminu in Abuja, the terms of reference of the committee among others are to facilitate research collaboration and exchange of expertise as well as technical and scientific information between foreign institutions and organisations particularly Nigerians in Diaspora and their local scientific and medical researchers and clinicians in Nigeria.
The Minister recalled that an international workshop with the theme: Stem Cell Transplantation as medicine of the 21st century was organized by a parastatal of the Ministry, National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) in collaboration with the Stem Cell Transportation Project for Africa in October last year.
She noted that the workshop agreed that Stem Cell Research and Therapy was an emerging area of medical science globally adding that the Workshop also recommended that a national committee be set up to articulate and produce a blue print on the research and application of stem Cell Transplantation Technology in Nigeria.

Dr. Perry Iloegbunam, the group Chairman of Stem Cell Transplantation Project for Africa had earlier said that the technology had already taken firm root in the developed countries and made a strong case for the research and adaptation of the technology in Nigeria.
